Jonathan Rhoades graduated with a degree in Microbiology (Biotechnology) from the University of Surrey, UK, and holds a PhD in the field of food microbiology and natural food preservatives from London South Bank University. He has many years experience in research, consultancy and teaching positions in universities, a government agency, and private companies in the UK and in Greece. His areas of activity as a food microbiologist include food safety and spoilage, potable water microbiology, natural and novel food preservatives, gut microbiology, and public health. In addition to food microbiology, he has also been active in research into local food systems and in the promotion of traditional foods.
His main research interests include
- Novel antimicrobials and processes for food safety
- Food preservation and active packaging
- The incidence of foodborne pathogens and foodborne disease
- Antibiotic resistance in food-associated bacteria
